How Do I Stay Joyful? I’m Heavily Meditated

How do I stay joyful? I’m heavily meditated. It’s a play on words and I made coffee mugs at the ceramic place with this phrase. Being joyful does not mean the absence of struggles or hardships. I’ve had my share of physical, mental, financial, and relationship struggles. Even in childhood, my parents struggled with alcoholism and mental stress. I learned to find joy through my spiritual practices, and they still work for me – no matter what comes my way.

Sometimes I have used the word meditation as a synonym for prayer. They are actually different, but complimentary. I enter into prayer as a way of relating with my Creator. One benefit of being in that relationship is that I can create space in my mind, body, and spirit to enter a still and quiet place.

I aim to stay heavily meditated all the time

I enjoy an ongoing meditation practice that goes with me everywhere. Literally in my bed, in my chair, on the couch, back deck, while walking, in the car. Anytime I relax and take a long slow deep breath, I make space for my heart and mind to find a pattern of peace and stillness.

I love the word practice

By calling it a practice, it takes away the need to do it just right all the time. In honor of World Meditation Day, here is a simple outline of the steps to meditation, and a few of the benefits are listed here.

Meditation is a practice that involves focusing your mind and achieving a state of calm, peace, and relaxation. It has been used since the beginning of time to help iron out the wrinkles in your mind, increasing mental clarity, reducing stress, and creating a sense of well-being. Here are some steps to help you get started with meditation:

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable space: Choose a quiet place where you can relax without distractions. It could be a dedicated meditation room or simply a quiet corner of your home.
  2. Get into a comfortable position: Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, either on a cushion, chair, or on the floor. You can also lie down if that is more comfortable for you, but be aware that you may be more prone to falling asleep.
  3. Relax your body: Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Allow your body to relax and release any tension you may be holding. Start from your head and work your way down to your toes, consciously relaxing each part of your body. There. Feel the peace?
  4. Focus on your breath: Bring your attention to your breath. Pay attention to the flow of each inhale and exhale. Notice the rise and fall of your abdomen or the sensation of air passing through your nostrils. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath.
  5. Be present in the moment: As thoughts, emotions, or distractions arise, acknowledge them without judgment. You can take notice of the random thought and then simply let it go. Refocus your attention on your breath or a chosen point of focus, such as a word, phrase, or scripture.
  6. Start with short sessions: If you’re new to meditation, you can begin with shorter sessions, such as 5 minutes, and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.
  7. Practice regularly: Aim to establish a regular meditation practice. I have always set aside a specific time each day for meditation. Consistency and repetition will help you experience the benefits of meditation more fully. Make it a habit and it will reduce your response to stress in your daily life.
  8. Explore different techniques: There are various meditation techniques you can try, such as mindfulness meditation, loving-kindness meditation, transcendental meditation, or guided meditation. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you.
  9. Seek guidance if needed: If you feel unsure or would like further guidance, consider attending meditation classes or using meditation apps that provide instructions and guided sessions. I have studied with many people through the years, and also practice at home with hubby. A qualified teacher or an app can help you deepen your practice.

Remember, meditation is a personal practice, and it may take time and patience to find your rhythm. Be gentle with yourself and approach it with an open mind. Over time, with consistent practice, you can cultivate a sense of calm and well-being through meditation that can get take you peacefully and joyfully through life. We can endure anything when we’re at peace within. xo Karen
