The Amazing Benefits of Avocado Oil

The amazing benefits of avocado oil are going to surprise you. We all know that getting healthy fats in our diet is essential with liver disease. However, many people, especially those with fatty liver disease, think that cutting fat out is the key. In fact, good fats help our body in many ways. Of course, on the outside, it’s part of what gives our skin a healthy glow and is an important ingredient in cosmetics. But lets take a peek into the benefits of getting fat from the inside, using a Liver Loving Diet

The Amazing Benefits of Avocado Oil

Go Power – Fat is the most dense food you can fuel your body with. It provides concentrated energy, and also helps activate stored energy by releasing fatty acids right when you need them.

Building Blocks – Fat both protects, and provides movement, for cells. It is a foundational part of the growth and communication in our body. In fact, our brain is made up of more than 50% fat.

Carry VitaminsVitamins, A, D, E, and K are fat soluble and our gut absorb them with, well you know – fat. When I took Hepatitis C treatment, I was required to eat 12 grams of fat with every single protease inhibitor pill that I took. It’s what helped metabolize it to do the job of killing the virus!

Insulation – Just saying, fat protects our vital organs like the liver, and heart, and protects us. It insulates our whole body, and can look pretty nice too when it’s creating curves in the right places.

Really Important Stuff – Before we dive in to the amazing benefits of avocado oil, let me just say that there is a lot of evidence regarding the need for fat in your diet. If you look at hormones, fatty acids, and other scientific research, you’ll understand why you need healthy fat in your diet.

The Liver Loving Diet

When I began eating for liver health, it was a steep learning curve. In my book, I put my trusted recipes touting the benefits of avocado or coconut oil over all of the bad oils. While I stand by every word, let me tell you that I had not discovered the benefits of avocado oil yet. Let me tell you about it.

1. Lower in saturated fat and oleic acid (omega 9s). This just means it’s the prima donna of oils.

2. Helps increase the absorption of natural vitamins and antibiotics at a higher rate.

3. Can reduce inflammation in general and with osteopenia, which was a huge boost to me with hip pain.

4. Helps reduce overall cholesterol better than corn oil and even more than coconut oil.

5. High smoke point makes it great for frying. Love this with my fried potatoes or a stir fry.

6. Unrefined, much like olive oil, which means less processing, and healthier for you in general.

7. Great flavor makes it easy to use for frying eggs, or searing chicken. It has a smooth texture and a delish flavor.

8. Nice for baking and substitutes for sweets and sauces alike.

9. Smoothest salad dressing you ever made. Go ahead and try it. You’ll agree.

10. Is used in skin care formulas to reduce flakiness and dryness. Can be good for eczema or psoriasis.

So if it’s good for your body, and your brain needs a lot of it:

Go ahead and add some to your smoothie. While you’re at it, drizzle a little bit over your seared asparagus. Stir it into your low sodium mayo for a HUGE wave of flavor. You can also add it to your marinade while grilling meat. I use it for everything I fry these days.

Our daily intake of fat is about not easy to calculate. That will be another article. But when you use oil, and you should use it in cooking every day, enjoy the amazing benefits of avocado oil.

New Liver Language 2023: MASH and MAFLD

The global liver community chose new terms or nomenclature for the various types of liver diseases. The new terms are more accurate and also less stigmatizing for the patient. Although it will take time to work them into every area of the medical community, here is a copy for people who have liver disease to start with. There is no more NASH, it will be MASH, NAFLD becomes MASLD, MetALD is a new term, and SLD is the overarching term for steatosis.

Winter Solstice: A Quiet Moment of Light, Loss, and Gratitude

The ending of a year and the dawn of a new one holds so many symbols. It requires a day of its own. Today, on the longest night, I’m holding all of it—light, shadow, joy, ache, gratitude, and hope. Winter whispers that none of it has to be sorted or solved. It only needs to be felt.

The Heartbeat of TRIO: Finding Support Close to Home

Every organ transplant recipient and caregiver understands the journey: it is a marathon, not a sprint, and while the medical teams are brilliant, the emotional and logistical toll can feel isolating. I was actually making plans to purchase a rental property and run a non-profit for patients post-transplant when Lorrinda called me. She had a different vision. In fact, Lorrinda had already connected with TRIO National and was dedicated to starting a local peer support chapter—she sold me on the idea!

This critical need for local, consistent peer support is what led to the founding of the Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO) Oklahoma Chapter. Learn more here about TRIO.

Dr. Thomas Starzl: Father of Transplantation and TRIO

Dr. Thomas Starzl: Father of Transplantation and TRIO – I learned of this while preparing a presentation for The AASLD Liver Meeting. Lorrinda Gray Davis, who is the founder of Oklahoma’s TRIO Chapter just told me this week. We started our chapter with me as her first VEEP because we saw the need. I had literally no real support post transplant. During COVID, she went to work and the rest is history. Now she is president of TRIO International. But I’m getting ahead of myself. This story is about Dr. Starzl and what I imagine to be one of the greatest collision of ideas in medical history. What a man. What a great heart he has.
